Our History

City of Fountains Chorus was founded in 1976, singing under the direction of Mary Lou Scott*. First President of the chorus was Donna Lefholz*. Past directors of the chorus have included Joy Pautler, Jan Brownson, Russ Craig and Mary Ann Rastorfer. Members are pleased, now, to have Lhea Wilson serving as director.

The chorus was chartered under the name of Santa Fe Trail Chapter. A high point in the chorus history was when a Charter Party was held at Regional Competition in Wichita just shortly after chartering – where all provided lovely and delicious refreshments – indeed a night to remember. (This particular occasion stands alone in Region #7 history) The following year at Regional Competition, Santa Fe Trail Chorus received 2nd place medals – an unusual achievement to say the least. Members voted to change the chorus name to City of Fountains Chorus over 20 years ago.

Members are particularly proud of their participation in Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army, and frequently singing for their special luncheons throughout the year.

An Annual Retreat is held (usually in February) – A Saturday set aside for members to prepare for Regional Competition (usually held in March or April). This is an opportunity for coaching sessions for the two competition songs, and some “fun” activities are usually planned for the day.

In recent years, City of Fountains Chorus has received 3rd place Small Chorus medals (3 times) at Regional Competition. The chorus participates annually in Regional Competition. Proud of being part of Sweet Adelines International Region #7 since chartering, city of Fountains Chorus will soon become part of Region #5.

A highlight of each year since 1976 has been the Annual Awards Dinner, initiated by Donna Lefholz. Chorus members receive recognition for the past year’s achievements such as programming, planning, fundraising and humor. The Traditional Harmony Award is the culmination of the evening’s program, given to the member who has served the Chorus well during her time of membership.

For over 10 years, City of Fountains Chorus has held a Summer Songfest Concert in June, inviting women singers from the community to join in learning and performing 3 songs in barbershop style harmony. Through this program, dozens of metro area women have been introduced to Sweet Adelines, with some participants joining the chorus, others simply enjoying attending chorus programs and shows. Summer Songfest is publicized throughout the community – and the public is invited to attend the concert which features performances by the chorus, with the last 3 numbers including the guest singers.

A Holiday Party is planned each winter – either in December or January – to celebrate winter holidays. It’s a potluck supper with program provided by talented chorus members and often “pickup quartets’ perform. The chorus members enjoy performing for various civic and community organizations. Singing engagements are scheduled throughout the year. Members often enjoy attending Sweet Adelines events, social events, programs and productions together. Former members often return and visit, ready to socialize with the group. Each year a group of members attend Sweet Adelines International Competition/Convention together in the fall. City of Fountains Chorus members are pleased to pitch in and help each other out in time of crises – often helping in the procurement of employment – and always ready to provide assistance when needed. In other words: true networking.

Rehearsals are held weekly on Mondays from 6:45 to 9:00 p.m. at Holmeswood Baptist church, 9700 Holmes Road, Kansas city, MO.
